Syntactical Sugar // Ames, Ia
Syntactical Sugar is a large scale installation of over 40 ft of paper and mixed media. The sculptures in the installation represent code and concepts of coding. As an artist and coder I started using art as a way to visually speak about code and how it works.

Lost in the Weeds
Invasive plant species negatively effect our world in a variety of ways. But before we can take action, we need to get closer to our enemy. Many of these plants are deceptively beautiful and it is their charm and persistence that has allowed them to take over our fields, woods and even our back yards. They are not bad plants, they are just behaving badly in our region.

This watercolor botanical series began in 2020 as the world was shutting down. Like many others, I turned to nature for solace. As I am a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, scientific illustration was a clear way forward. This was the perfect opportunity to begin a body of nature artworks that would be healing for people and the environment alike. These botanical paintings can take 30-100 hours to complete from the beginning field research to the final watercolor brush stroke.

The continuation of this project has been made possible by the American Rescue Plan, The Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Iowa Arts Council. Armed with botanical art and a spirit of environmental stewardship, Iowans can heal the ecosystem and prevent further damage.

Poetry& Place
In keeping with the neighborhood theme, this is a reading and conversation with poets John David Thompson and Staci Harper-Bennett about poetry supporting a sense of place. Location in the heart of the Beaverdale neighborhood.

Staci Harper-Bennett is the author of four chapbooks- Soon is Not, Brittle Futures, Thirty, and Crime Scenes- and is known throughout the Midwest for her written and spoken word poetry. She has performed at events such as Slutwalk Des Moines and One Billion Rising, and lent her voice and experience to "Words Save Lives," an exploration of poetry as a suicide prevention tool. When not writing poetry, she can be found at home in her garden or working at the Des Moines Art Center.

John David Thompson has more than 15 volumes of published poetry. Among his most recent works - Iowa Poems 175: Poetry to Observe Iowa’s 175th Birthday.
He wrote a whopping 88 new poems for this volume, which he started a year before the pandemic began. All the while, he has worked full-time as a teacher of English, commuting 40 miles a day from Pella to the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont schools. In writing poetry, he said, “I try to avoid a teaching tone rather than writing for both poetry’s sake — and the poem’s sake.”

John David Thompson’s studies include the hallowed University of Iowa Writers Workshop and Harvard Creative Writing Program.

One Second Dances Documentary // Michelle Marie
One Second Dances (2019-2021) was a durational performance project that became an experimental documentary. Beginning as a way to catalogue my daily movement vocabulary, I accidentally ended up capturing the unfolding of a global pandemic and the subsequent collective and individual mental, emotional, and physical breakdown that resulted from it. This film invites the viewer in to see the tiny ways that things slowly shift and change as manifested through my body. One Second Dances (2019-2021) will be screened on loop for the duration of Art Week to represent the expansive and modular nature of a post-temporal Covid world.

Surface Depth Reception
"SURFACE DEPTH – A multimedia group exhibit featuring 5 local artists: Brad Ball + Tatiana Giacinti + Michael Van Dyke + Eric J Wickes + Fej Williams.

About: What lies beneath the surface? Art, they say, imitates Life. But doesn't Life imitate Art as we fall deeper into the Matrix? World events, identity politics and cultural issues: on the surface, the narratives are constantly changing, a broken reality, manufactured and disseminated through fractured images. Thirty-second soundbites presented with sanctimony and glitz instead of objectivity. It's shallow. It's 'superficial.' As Artists, we are not remotely superficial in our observations and analysis. There's always a bigger picture and a deeper truth, whether it's an internal exercise for personal healing or a story we're trying to tell. So we dive in - as deep as we can get, to penetrate the 'surface' of Life.

This Art Week event is located in the basement of the FITCH Building - a non-traditional space used to exhibit. The access is right next to the Steven Vail Fine Arts Project Room entrance, on Walnut street.

Reception #1: During The Fitch Building Open house on Saturday, June 18 6-9pm
Reception #2: During Downtown Art Week neighborhood feature on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 6-9pm

Located in the basement of the Fitch Building,  304 15th St, Des Moines IA 50309.

Steven Vail Fine Arts will host an all-day soirée. The gallery will be open to the public (as usual) and provide beverages and snacks for hungry patrons after their Art Week adventures. Hopefully, we will include a fun photo opportunity...

Kate Wiley, Curator of the exhibition ON AND ON AND ON, will give a short, informal presentation about the history of the gallery, it's new location and the concept behind ON AND ON AND ON. In addition to elaborating on her curatorial process and how it can relate to artwork your own home, Kate will also be available to discuss the galleries' services: appraisals, consigning, and art advising.

[What a great opportunity! This is a pretty loose idea at the moment based on what I did with museum events in the past. I am Very open to suggestions! This can happen on any day of Art Week, or multiple days. Whatever is best for your programming. Thanks, Kate Wiley]

Over the past few years, we’ve been caught in a relentless state of heartbreak, suffering, injustice and despair. It’s too much to carry, and yet we can’t let it consume us. We all need a way to cope so we’ve created a space where you can write about your pain and sorrow or your hopes and dreams for this world. Artist Julia Franklin and poet Mallory Abreu invite you to make anonymous contributions and explore our exhibition space in a cargo trailer outside Mainframe Studios on Tuesday, June 21 at 5pm and outside The University Library Café on Thursday, June 23 at 5:30pm. These free events are part of ArtWeek, and everyone is welcome to participate. Address: Fitch Building, 304 15th St, Des Moines, IA 50309

Group Therapy is an interactive installation that tells a familiar yet often uncomfortable story. Male mental health can be a delicate subject to broach, but it is an important topic that needs to be talked about openly without fear. There is an overt hesitation for men to speak about difficulties they face in expressing their feelings in order to avoid being labeled as weak. My intention is not only to create an environment that is human in its familiarity, but creates a dialogue with viewers where we question the validity of negative connotations of moments of weakness and reflect on the suicide rate disparity between men and women. Viewers are open to sit in the empty chairs to think, reflect, gain perspective, take photos, and possibly learn something about themselves and others.

Please join us in this unique and uplifting community experience and be a part of creating a portable monument of collective healing. Support for part of this project is provided by the Iowa Arts Council.

Emerging Iowa Artists
The Emerging Iowa Artist (EIA) Program presented by Principal® is a juried showcase of promising visual artists that delivers a pathway into the established competitive career within the visual art industry. It aims to foster professional and artistic development while nurturing creative skills. Qualified artists are required to apply to the show in the same manner as professional artists and submit their work in accordance to the specifications. All applicants are required to provide at the time of application proof of residency and enrollment. All work submitted is juried by the same jury. At the Festival in June, the Awards Jury will jury all exhibiting artists and award an emerging artist the Leysens Family Best of Emerging Iowa Artist Award. This award comes with a $1,000 cash award and an automatic invitation to the 2023 Festival.
